In the US, 10 states have container deposit legislation. The additional cost is built-in up front and it is returned when the bottle is returned. Stores that sell these bottles are not required to take them back. The incentive with the bottle deposit is to increase recycling. Making the bottle-return process difficult lowers the return rate. States that have this deposit should commit to making the bottle return process easy.
